October is National Orthodontic Health Month. At Parks Orthodontics we recognize that Halloween can be a scary time for teeth! That’s why we are taking this time to discuss some tips and advice to help keep teeth safe from decay, and protect braces, clear aligners and other orthodontic appliances.
Stay away from hard, sticky, crunchy or chewy candy and snacks. These include:
- Hard or chewy candies
- Bubblegum (even the sugarless kind)
- Jelly beans
While we know that Halloween will be filled with sugary sweets, be sure that you remember to brush and floss after! Too many sweets can lead to cavities and the wrong kind of treats can lead to damaged braces.
However, all this does not mean that you cannot enjoy Halloween. In fact, there are many delicious alternatives sweet choices that are “braces friendly”. Those in orthodontic treatment can indulge by eating soft, nut-free candies, soft candy bars, peppermint patties, peanut butter cups or chocolates that melt in the mouth and require no chewing.
If you have any questions about your dental health during orthodontic treatment, please ask us! We are here to keep your braces in tip-top shape!
