A Humble Beginning with Big Dreams
Parks Orthodontics started modestly on Beechmont Drive in 1978, with just three patients and one employee: Dr. Parks’ wife, Sandy, who took care of appointments, phone calls and bookkeeping. It wasn’t long before more patients were drawn to Dr. Parks’ personalized care, and the practice outgrew its small space. By the early 1980s, Parks Orthodontics had moved to a larger office in Denbigh Professional Park, where the team expanded, and Sandy welcomed new clinical technicians to help meet the increasing demand.
One of the early team members was Ellen McCandless, who met her future husband in the orthodontic chair! Ellen remains a beloved part of the Parks Orthodontics team, with years of memories and patient care. Dr. Parks’ children also contributed to the practice from a young age, helping with chores and eventually, like Meredith, learning hands-on skills to assist with patient care.
Building a Place of Fun and Friendship
By the 1990s, Dr. Parks’ focus on fun was evident throughout the practice. The Denbigh Boulevard office underwent significant renovations to include a larger waiting room, a soundproof game room with pinball machines and arcade games, and even a giant fish tank. Hand-painted murals and a vibrant neon “Smile” sign greeted patients, creating an exciting environment that encouraged them to look forward to each visit.
The lively atmosphere helped redefine orthodontic care, making it an enjoyable experience for patients of all ages. With each milestone, the practice expanded to new locations in Williamsburg and Smithfield, each designed with the same open, welcoming layout that made Parks Orthodontics unique.
Innovative Ideas and A Forward-Thinking Approach
In the late 1990s, Dr. Parks introduced a rewards program to make treatment even more enjoyable. This system featured giveaways such as beach trips, movie nights and even new bikes. Patients could earn points for good oral hygiene, attendance and more, creating positive reinforcement that built good habits and enthusiasm.
Dr. Parks’ forward-thinking approach also introduced the latest technological advancements. By 2004, the practice was fully digital, with innovations such as digital charting and imaging. His daughter Allison joined to assist with operations, while his son Will took on the practice’s growing IT needs. Dr. Meredith Parks, having completed her orthodontics residency, joined the team in 2006, continuing her father’s legacy of quality care.
Celebrating Family and Community
As Parks Orthodontics grew, so did its contributions to the community. Dr. Parks participated in events like the Kyle Petty Ride Across America Charity Ride, which raises funds for chronically ill children. Dr. Parks found purpose in this event, blending his love for motorcycles with his dedication to giving back.
After Dr. Parks’ passing in 2015, Dr. Meredith Parks and Allison Parks Hale continued to honor his legacy by creating the William R. Parks Memorial Scholarship, supporting patients in achieving their educational goals. The scholarship serves as a lasting tribute to Dr. Parks’ dedication to his patients and community.
Advancements and Expansions
In 2014, Parks Orthodontics opened its state-of-the-art flagship location in Yorktown, equipped with advanced technology like the iTero digital scanner and a comfortable open-treatment layout. Patients now enjoy a seamless experience that aligns with Dr. Parks’ vision of compassionate and advanced care.
The innovative Sunny Money program, which allows patients to earn “money” for rewards and fun events, continues to be popular, especially with the addition of unique monthly contests. Patients can earn Sunny Money through good behavior and responsible care, making orthodontics more engaging for young patients.
